Blind Resumes
A little explanation on blind resumes: Basically blind resumes are ways of evaluating teams without looking at the team name. Usually, they use record, strength of schedule and different rankings, usually computer based ones.
Things I will use:
- Record
- Strength of Schedule: a ranking of the difficulty of schedules
- BPI: an ESPN computer ranking of the college basketball teams that includes on the score of the game, the venue, the opponent, the pace of play and the injuries of important players.
- Kenpom.com ranking: one of the most respected rankings in college basketball, a computer ranking by Ken Pomeroy (and personally by far my favorite ranking).
#1:
Team 1
Record: 22-5
SOS: 79
BPI: 22
Kenpom ranking: 29
Team 2
Record: 20-7
SOS: 8
BPI: 19
Kenpom ranking: 12
Team 1 is 18th ranked Arkansas (AP poll), and Team 2 is 20th ranked Baylor. Baylor has a strength of schedule that is enormously higher, which more than makes up for their two more losses. Additionally, their BPI is higher and their Kenpom ranking is 17 spots higher. I just don't get why Baylor doesn't get the nod over Arkansas.
#2:
Team 1
Record: 21-5
SOS: 42
BPI: 9
Kenpom ranking: 7
Team 2
Record: 24-4
SOS: 106
BPI: 15
Kenpom ranking: 16
Team 1 is 9th ranked Utah (AP poll), team 2 is 10th ranked Notre Dame (AP poll). I used to think that Notre Dame was underrated, but Zach Auguste's struggles have caused them to just be another product of the over hyped ACC. Utah is better in every single category except for having 1 less wins, with BPI and kenpom rankings about twice as good as Notre Dame. I don't understand why they are right next to each other in the AP poll, especially when the ranking came out before Utah had their 5th and maybe worst loss (vs. Oregon this past Sunday).
#3:
Team 1
Record: 22-6
SOS: 186
BPI: 86
Kenpom ranking: 84
Team 2
Record: 23-6
SOS: 164
BPI: 97
Kenpom ranking: 89
Team 3
Record: 21-4
SOS: 304
BPI: 107
Kenpom ranking: 91
Team 1 is Iona, Team 2 is Wofford and Team 3 is UC Davis, who I absolutely LOVE. Corey Hawkins is the best shooter in the country (and I say that with no doubt). Looking at these three teams, you may think that UC Davis is clearly the worst, which is reasonable, but if you were to take out SOS, UC Davis would look just as good, if not better than the other 3. The biggest reason UC Davis' strength of schedule is so low is because their conference is made up of a few very solid teams, and a bunch of terrible teams. These terrible teams have too big of an impact on UC Davis' SOS, which is known to be a major problem with that ranking. The biggest injustice about these three teams is that in Joe Lunardi's bracketology, Wofford and Iona are 12 seeds, and UC Davis is a 14 seed. This is a major difference, especially for teams with such similar resumes.
