Blind Resumes

For this blog post, I would like to do something called a blind resume.  Here are the resumes of two teams.  They include SOS (strength of schedule rank in the country), RPI (a computerized ranking of each team), and record (W-L).  It is your job to decide which two of these four teams should be a number one seed.

Team 1                    Team 2                 Team 3                Team 4
Record: 9-3            Record: 12-1        Record: 11-1        Record: 11-2
RPI: 4                     RPI: 13                RPI: 1                   RPI: 35
SOS: 2                   SOS: 79               SOS: 13               SOS: 105

I am guessing many of you looked at this and picked Team 3, and then either Team 2 or Team 1.
Team 1 is Kansas, ranked number 16 in the AP Poll.  Team 2 is Michigan St, ranked number 5 in the AP Poll.  Team 3 is the biggest surprise: Umass, ranked number 23 in the AP Poll.  Team 4 is Duke, ranked number 7 in the AP Poll.
If I looked at this, I would definitely pick Team 3, and most likely Team 1 as well.  If anyone looked at the teams, they would most likely pick Duke and Michigan St, Team 2, and Team 4.

Here is another one.  The numbers for these two teams are very similar, but the teams, most think are not.

Team 1                              Team 2
Record: 13-0                     Record: 12-0
RPI: 10                              RPI: 12
SOS: 97                            SOS: 120

Team 1 is Arizona, the number 1 team in the country by the AP Poll.  Team 2 is Oregon, who is ranked number 10 by the AP Poll.
These two teams are two similar to be ranked so differently.

Here the last one.  Decide which team should make the tournament, and which should not.

Team 1                              Team 2
Record: 7-4                       Record: 11-3
RPI: 22                              RPI: 65
SOS: 20                            SOS: 160

Team 1 is UC Santa Barbara, and Team 2 is VCU.  In my opinion, UC Santa Barbara has a much better resume, with only one more loss than VCU, with a colossally harder schedule.  Their RPI is 43 spots higher. This wasn't debatable for me, Team 1 is the easy, and surprising choice.

Although I think the RPI is not as important as some people think, I think it is worth noticing how fans automatically overrate teams based on name recognition, and just believe the AP and coaches polls are all there is.  If instead I had told you the team name and their ranking in the AP and coaches polls, then you would have picked Michigan St and Duke, and Arizona and VCU without second thought.
