Sorry for not posting for a while, but I wanted to take some time to examine the past few weeks, and then do some blind resumes.  Here are some thoughts: 1.  The Big 3 (Teams) Every ranking you look at recently puts the same three teams at the top (BPI, Coaches Poll, kenpom.com, AP Poll): Villanova, Purdue, and Virginia.  None of these teams were particularly highly rated going into the season.  Sure, they were NCAA tournament teams, and maybe even projected Sweet 16 teams at that, but I don't think anyone would have expected these three to occupy the top three spots in the rankings.  Let's take a look at all three. Villanova Jay Wright has quickly turned Villanova into a powerhouse program.  Two years ago, they won the national title, last year they were a one seed, and this year they are ranked number one with yet another superb team.  What's most shocking to me is the stats of their top six.  They have 6 guys averaging at least 9.7 points...

It was a very eventful week in college basketball, and we're finally getting to see which teams are for real, and which teams are not. Big Upsets There were some huge upsets this week.  #1 Duke lost to Boston College, who is 10-62 in their last 72 conference games in the ACC.  This is a pretty bad loss for Duke, but the Blue Devils have been so inconsistent defensively all year long that it is honestly not that surprising.  I could see Duke getting a lot of huge wins this year, but also losing a few head-scratchers. #2 Kansas also lost twice this week.  The first loss was to Washington, a huge surprise considering that Washington, just like Boston College, has been terrible in recent years.  Washington is probably better than they were last year under new coach Mike Hopkins, a former Syracuse assistant who has brought the 2-3 zone defense with him to Washington.  That loss was concerning, but the Jayhawks also lost at home to Arizona State.  Unlik...

Duke vs. Michigan State This was the most hyped up matchup of the day, with the top 2 teams in the country facing off against each other.  I thought this game lived up, even when potential number one pick in next year's draft in Marvin Bagley III went out for the game early with a painful looking eye injury.  Duke controlled the glass in this one, out-rebounding Michigan St 46-34 and also won the the turnover battle, forcing 17 and making only 9.  I was really surprised by the turnover numbers particularly, as Duke has a really young team, with two young guards, Gary Trent, Jr. and Trevon Duval, who I figured would be prone to making turnovers, to go along with Grayson Allen, who has averaged at least 2 turnovers a game in back to back seasons.  Allen was really impressive scoring the basketball, and was basically unstoppable scoring the basketball at times, but his 37 point game was inflated by some late game free throws and a couple of poor defensive plays by MSU...

College basketball is back!!!  My favorite time of the year has returned. Top 25 rankings to be out soon.  Here are my thoughts from some offseason stuff and the slowest first weekend of college basketball in years. 1. FBI Scandal The recent college basketball FBI scandal was by far the biggest story of the offseason.  10 people were indicted because of corruption in college basketball, including 5 assistant coaches, from power programs such as Arizona, Oklahoma State, Miami, etc.  The biggest impact thus far has been the firing of Rick Pitino, Louisville's coach and one of the most respected coaches nationwide.  This scandal has really put a damper on the beginning of the season, at least for me, especially when players like Collin Sexton, De'Anthony Melton and Jeffery Carroll are suspended indefinitely due to allegations related to the scandal (on a side note, why is the NCAA basically the only place where people are guilty until proven innocent? ...

1. The Underseeded Wichita State (10 seed) This is just a disgrace.  Number 8 in the country on kenpom.com, the Shockers are way underseeded.  I think that they should have gotten a 4 or 5 seed, and that they are a 2 or 3 seed quality team.  Look for them to beat Dayton easily and then at least give Kentucky a run for their money if they don't take them out. St. Mary's (7 seed) This is another incredibly disappointing seeding. I think this team deserves a 4 seed, and a 7 seed is terrible for not only them but also for Arizona, who could have to play them in the second round (by the way, I would love to see that game, particularly the Lauri Markkanen vs. Jock Landale matchup).  Fun fact: kenpom.com ranks St. Mary's number 14 and Arizona number 20, while St. Mary's is a 7 seed and Arizona is the 2 seed in the same region. Although this season has been dominated by blue-blood programs thus far (UCLA, Kentucky, Duke Kansas, North Carolina, etc.), there are plenty of underrated teams who could steal the headlines come March.  Here are my picks to shock the world in this year's March Madness. Wichita State Gregg Marshall is going to make his 6th straight NCAA tournament this year with the Shockers, barring a massive collapse.  Many people might have thought that Wichita State couldn't do it without Fred Van Vleet and Ron Baker, who both graduated last year.  However, the Shockers are once again a really good team that is a major threat to make some noise in the NCAA tournament.  Led by a dominant defense and 6 players who score at least 7.8 points per game, Wichita State is ranked number 13 in the kenpom.com rankings (a Ken Pomeroy computer ratings system that ranks teams based on offensive and defensive efficiency).  The most amazing thing to me about this program is its consiste...

In this post, I'm going to pretend that basketball teams are stocks, and give advice on whether to buy, sell or hold.  I'm picking 5 of the most talked about and well-known teams in the country. Baylor - SELL With Villanova's loss, Baylor should move to #1 in the country, barring a loss to Oklahoma St.  While I think Baylor is really good, definitely a top 10 team, and probably a top 5 team, I don't think they are worthy of the number one spot.  They barely beat Iowa State this week at home, and don't have the elite talent that other top teams do.  While I think they are still a great team, I would sell them as the number one team in the country, because I think they are going to lose a game or two in the near future. Duke - HOLD Duke is ranked number 8 right now.  I think that they have the most talent in the country by far.  Harry Giles has looked very good in limited minutes since returning from his knee injury, and I think that if this team puts it...

College basketball is underway yet again, and there have been quite a few good games thus far.  There have also been several great performances, and a lot of changes in the rankings.  Sorry for the long post, just wanted to detail the first couple weeks of the season.  Here are some of my early season headlines: 1. Great Opening Night Opening night this year in college basketball included a number of freshman debuts, and a few surprising games, but the highlight was the Armed Forces Classic, which had two match-ups of top 12 teams at the time.  #10 Arizona and #12 Michigan State (AP rankings at the time) faced off in the first thriller.  The game wasn't one of great shooting by either team, probably due to some rust and both teams playing great defense.  This didn't stop a highlight show of dunks and great plays by MSU freshman Miles Bridges who showed his powerful strength around the rim.  However, MSU couldn't find another scorer and Arizona'...

1. Oregon is upset early. The Ducks are a good team, but in my opinion, more of a 3 seed than a one seed, although their blowout win over Utah in the PAC-12 title game was nice. The real problem for me regarding their NCAA tourney hopes is how many bad losses they have.  They have 3 losses against teams outside the top 100, and two more against teams outside the top 50.  This doesn't bode well for the NCAA tournament, as teams will only be coming after them even harder, as they are a 1 seed.  I don't think the Ducks make the Elite 8, and although they certainly are not likely to lose in the first round, and I think they almost definitely won't, but of all the 1 seeds in recent years, I think they are most likely to lose of any of them. 2.  The Big Ten has a strong showing. The Big Ten was under seeded this year, with only one team seeded 4 or higher, and teams like Indiana, Michigan St, and Iowa seeded lower than what they were projected to be seeded.  I t...

ACC Championship Game: North Carolina vs. Virginia My Projected Champ: Virginia 65-61 MVP: Malcom Brogdon I'm going with the favorites to make the final in this one.  Virginia will get the win in my opinion, as I really don't like UNC's team this year.  Yeah, they are really good, but how can you expect to contend for a national title with almost no outside shooting.  I think Virginia will cruise through their side of the bracket, and win a close one over the Heels.  The Cavaliers should be able to play a very slow pace, which is definitely the pace they want to play.  According to kenpom.com, they are the slowest paced team in the country, and are also the number one team on the site.  I may be wrong, but I don't sense a good end to the season for the Tar Heels, although their one seed in this bracket should allow them to make the final. 1.  Vandy makes an Elite 8 run. My thinking:  Vandy is a lot better than people think.  Although they were on the outside looking in for the NCAA tournament a week ago, I held faith in them and said that they could be a candidate to make the Sweet 16, despite being 16-11 and in the First Four out in Joe Lunardi's tourney bracket.  The Commodores now have a much better chance to get in, with wins this week on the road against Florida (watch this  crazy shot ), and then over Kentucky on Saturday.  These wins should put them in the tournament, barring any collapse.  Additionally, Vanderbilt is #22 on kenpom.com, which is a lot better than their projected tournament seed right now.  They have a lot of shooting talent, a top level big guy, and enough veteran leadership to get the job done. 2. The SEC may be the tightest race right now, with no dominant team, and 4 teams within a game of first place.  Kentucky has a one game lead over Texas A&M, South Carolina and LSU, but anything could happen from here on out.  Kentucky still has to go on the road against Florida and Vandy, and also has a visit from LSU, while Texas A&M gets to play Mizzou, Auburn and Mississippi State before playing a slightly tougher game against Vandy at home.  South Carolina also has an easy schedule the rest of the way, while LSU has to go on the road against UK.  Here is a little paragraph on each of the top 4 plus #'s 5 and 6 Florida and Vanderbilt. 1. The PAC-12 is full of overrated and underrated teams, so I'm going to break the conference down that way. Let's start with the overrateds: Overrated Teams: Oregon Oregon is being treated like a top team right now, ranked number 16 in the AP poll, but the most incredible thing to me is that they are a 3 seed by top bracketologists Jerry Palm (CBS) and Joe Lunardi (ESPN).  This is absolutely ridiculous.  Oregon lost twice this week, once in an absolute blowout from the start, to an unranked team in California.  To be blown out by a team that isn't top 30 in either the AP poll or kenpom.com is not a good sign.  Not to mention, they followed up that loss with another loss, this one to Stanford, who was 11-11 and had lost 4 in a row, all to unranked teams.  Oregon has some decent wins. The one on the road against Arizona is particularly nice, but bad losses litter the schedule.  They have lost to an astonishing 5 non-top 60 kenpom.com teams and an even mor...

The Big 10 has a lot of talent at the top, and also a lot bad teams at the bottom.  You have ranked teams like Iowa, Michigan State, Maryland, Purdue and Indiana, as well as good teams like Michigan and Ohio State.  However, at the bottom, Rutgers, Minnesota, Illinois, Penn State and Nebraska are as bad as the bottom feeders of any conference. I think Maryland is the best team in the conference when they are on, but can be inconsistent, and Iowa has been better as of late, so I'm going to give them the nod at #1.  Iowa's first win over Michigan State was impressive, but MSU had no Valentine, and it was at Iowa.  I definitely didn't expect the second victory though, as Michigan St had Valentine back and played on their home court, yet still got handled by the Hawkeyes.  Iowa has also beaten Purdue on the road, which is a very nice win.  It's very curious to me that the Hawkeyes started off the year so poorly, as they lost a preseason game to a ...

The Big East is an underrated conference this year, led by a really good team in Villanova.  They have two top 6 teams in both the AP and coaches poll (Oklahoma and Xavier).  Right now on kenpom.com, Villanova is the number one team in the country (they are #4 in the AP poll).  I think I agree with AP poll ranking more than the kenpom.com ranking, as the kenpom ranking may favor early season cupcakes too much.  Oklahoma beat Villanova by 23 points, so in my opinion there is no way they are behind the Wildcats.  I do think Villanova is really good though, just like they were last year before they fell in the NCAA tournament to NC State.  Villanova beat Xavier by an astonishing 31 points, which is Xavier's only loss on the year.  Xavier is pretty good as well, with plenty of good wins.  The Musketeers have beaten Alabama, USC (who should be ranked this week), Michigan, Cincinnati, Dayton, Wake Forest, Butler and Ma...

I was originally going to move to the Big East, but I had to give a Big 12 preview, just because of how incredible of a game the Oklahoma-Kansas game was.  It was the ultimate matchup, number 1 KU vs. number 2 Oklahoma ( in the AP poll), and the opposite in the coaches poll!  Both teams played very well all the way up to the end, with Kansas coming through in the end on a controversial steal by Frank Mason.  Mason stood way too close to Buddy Hield inbounding the ball and ended up getting the steal to seal the game.  Although in my opinion the refs clearly missed the call, good coaching by Bill Self to tell his guys to move close to the inbounder with so little space between the out of bounds line and the stands in Allen Fieldhouse.  Buddy Hield played an absolutely incredible game, scoring 46 points.  Oklahoma doesn't have much depth as they have a weak bench, but Buddy Hield is playing like the best player in the country, Jordan Woodard ha...

The college basketball season has been going on for a while, but in my opinion, that was all just preseason, and the real season starts when almost every game is a test, when good teams actually have to play on the road (crazy I know!), and when the marquee rivalries begin.  I am going to do a little preview on each of the conferences in separate posts. ACC The ACC was supposed to be the dominant league this season, and while they are still a really good league, led by a few top tier teams, overall they have been a disappointment.  Right now, Virginia looks like the team to beat.  Their only loss comes against a pretty good George Washington team on the road, and they have big wins over West Virginia and Villanova, as well as wins over California, and Ohio State (on the road).  Malcom Brogdon gets much more publicity for the Cavaliers, but in my opinion, Anthony Gill is their best player.  Gill has a huge motor, plays great defense, and is a bi...

Top 10 10. Jack Gibbs, Davidson How many guys can say they play on a 7-1 team who's only loss is on the road against North Carolina, while averaging over 25 PPG, almost 5 RPG, and over 4 APG, and shooting 54 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three and 83 percent from the line?  If you guessed Jack Gibbs, you are correct.  Gibbs may not be the most well known college basketball player in the world, but he is one of the best players in the country. 9. Kyle Wiltjer, Gonzaga Wiltjer has had a down year so far percentage wise, as his three point and field goal percentages are down by a good bit.  This may be due to the loss of his three talented guards, or due to taking more shots, but I think he is just going through a slump and will turn it around quickly.  Wiltjer is taking a lot of shots this year, as the least he has taken in a game all year is 12, but I think he should be a little more selective, especially when Prezemek Karnowski comes back. 8. There have been many storylines in the past week, including the #1 team in the country going down.  Here is my take: Unranked (and 3 loss!) UCLA upsets #1 Kentucky This is a real shocker, and in no way did I (or anyone) see this coming.  One thing I learned is that this year's UK team is nowhere near last year's UK team.  Last year's team blew out a better UCLA team, giving up single digit points in the first half.  I'm not sure what the problem was for the Wildcats, as it didn't look like the same team that beat Duke easily.  Star guards Jamal Murray and Tyler Ulis were a combined 7-28 from the field.  Ulis played injured, and Kentucky sorely missed Marcus Lee, who played just 4 minutes due to an injury early in the game.  UCLA showed massive potential with this win, although we all knew they had the talent to be a really good team.  For the Bruins, it's just a matter of putting up consistent results.  Overall, this is a big wakeup call f...
